Robinson’s Military Service Listed Again
Jackie Robinson’s Military Service Page Restored After Temporary Removal from Pentagon Website

Earlier today, the Department of Defense webpage honoring Jackie Robinson’s military service was temporarily removed, sparking reactions from his family and the public. The page, which celebrated Robinson’s service as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, was taken down as part of a broader effort by the Pentagon to eliminate content related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
David Robinson, Jackie Robinson’s son, expressed his surprise and disappointment at the removal, stressing his father’s profound contributions not only to sports and society but also to the military. “My father’s legacy extends far beyond baseball—he served his country with honor, and his story is one that deserves to be shared,” David Robinson stated.
The Pentagon’s decision to remove pages honoring Black Medal of Honor recipient Army Maj. Gen. Charles Calvin Rogers and other tributes to Japanese American service members has sparked controversy. These moves are part of a campaign to remove DEI-related content, which, according to Pentagon press secretary John Ullyot, aligns with a directive to refocus on military heroes’ patriotism and dedication rather than their race or ethnicity. Ullyot referred to DEI as “Discriminatory Equity Ideology” and emphasized that recognition should be based solely on one’s contributions to the nation.
In response to the backlash, Ullyot assured the public that any errors in content removal would be corrected promptly. Shortly after, the webpage featuring Jackie Robinson’s military service was restored, reaffirming the importance of his legacy.
While the Pentagon maintains its position on the matter, the incident highlights the ongoing national debate about how to honor and recognize military heroes from diverse backgrounds. Robinson’s story, as both a trailblazer in sports and a decorated military officer, remains a powerful reminder of the profound impact that individuals can have on society—across all arenas.
