The World Has Lost A Basketball Legend And Humanitarian Dikembe Mutombo. Known for his towering presence on the court and his signature finger wag, Mutombo was a force to be reckoned with in the NBA. His incredible shot-blocking skills and defensive prowess earned him a place among the all-time greats, with four Defensive Player of the Year awards to his name.  His incredible shot-blocking skills and defensive prowess earned him a place among the all-time greats, with four Defensive Player of the Year awards to his name.

Beyond basketball, Mutombo was a beacon of hope and philanthropy. Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he dedicated much of his life to improving healthcare and education in his homeland. His efforts through the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation transformed countless lives, and his commitment to social causes was as impactful as his achievements in sports.

Fans, players, and communities around the globe will deeply miss Mutombo’s spirit, kindness, and infectious smile. As we remember his remarkable contributions both on and off the court, we celebrate a life that inspired many and a legacy that will endure for generations to come. Rest in peace, Dikembe.

Mutombo’s family revealed two years ago that he was undergoing treatment in Atlanta for a brain tumor. The NBA said he died surrounded by his family.

“Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others.

“There was nobody more qualified than Dikembe to serve as the NBA’s first Global Ambassador. He was a humanitarian at his core. He loved what the game of basketball could do to make a positive impact on communities, especially in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo and across the continent of Africa. I had the privilege of traveling the world with Dikembe and seeing first-hand how his generosity and compassion uplifted people. He was always accessible at NBA events over the years — with his infectious smile, deep booming voice and signature finger wag that endeared him to basketball fans of every generation.” VIA ESPN
