Floyd Mayweather can add another dominant win to his record – though technically, it doesn’t count.

The 47-year-old fighter won handily in an exhibition match with John Gotti III in Mexico City on Saturday night.

Gotti is the son of late crime boss John Gotti.  The two previously fought in 2023.

Mayweather officially retired from boxing in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 record, and exclusivly competes in exhibition matches.

On August 25, 2024, Floyd Mayweather Jr. faced John Gotti III in a highly anticipated exhibition bout at the FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida. This fight was notable not only for its clash of legacies but also for the drama that unfolded both in and out of the ring.

This was the second time Mayweather and Gotti III were set to meet in an exhibition match. Their previous encounter on June 11, 2023, had ended controversially, with Mayweather winning by TKO amid a post-fight altercation involving both camps. The rematch was expected to offer Gotti III another opportunity to prove himself and potentially seek redemption against the legendary Mayweather.

The bout began with an electric atmosphere, as fans packed the arena eager to witness the continuation of this intriguing matchup. From the opening bell, Mayweather showcased his renowned defensive skills and strategic acumen. His ability to evade Gotti III’s punches while landing precise counters was evident. Mayweather’s superior footwork and defensive maneuvers kept him largely out of harm’s way, allowing him to dictate the pace of the fight.

Gotti III, determined to make a statement, came out aggressively. He attempted to leverage his power and stamina to challenge Mayweather’s dominance. Despite his best efforts, Gotti III struggled to break through Mayweather’s defenses and find consistent success. The bout featured high-energy exchanges, but Mayweather’s experience and ring IQ were on full display.

The fight ended in a dramatic fashion. As the match progressed, Mayweather continued to display his mastery of the sport, landing effective punches and avoiding significant damage. The fight concluded with Mayweather securing another victory by unanimous decision. The result was met with mixed reactions; while Mayweather’s performance was praised for its technical brilliance, Gotti III’s tenacity and improvements since their last encounter were also acknowledged.

This fight reinforced Mayweather’s status as one of boxing’s greatest. His ability to remain unbeaten and showcase his skills in exhibition matches continues to captivate fans. For Gotti III, the rematch provided valuable experience and exposure, despite the loss. The bout also underscored the spectacle of exhibition fights, blending competitive spirit with entertainment.

In the aftermath, both fighters reflected on the bout, with Mayweather praising Gotti III’s determination and Gotti III acknowledging the challenge posed by the seasoned champion. The fight added another chapter to the evolving story of exhibition boxing, highlighting the ongoing allure of high-profile matchups and their impact on the sport.

Will Mayweather ever fight an ‘official’ match again?  Who should his next opponent be?
